JOB SUMMARY
The Traffic Signal Technician performs work of a complex and specialized nature installing, maintaining, operating, programming and troubleshooting a diverse range of traffic control devices and communications equipment ranging from L.

equipped signal heads to programmable traffic signal controllers, malfunction monitor units, video detection cameras and components, solar powered school flashers, battery backup units, high speed wireless communication devices and antennas, emergency vehicle preemption, various types of fiber optic and Ethernet equipped devices as well as a multitude of other advanced electronic and electrical devices related to the traffic signal field.
Subject to being on call for emergency repair work after normal work hours and on weekends.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assembles and installs traffic signal heads, traffic signal controller cabinets and associated aerial and underground cabling.
Participates in the erection and construction of traffic signal related hardware and associated equipment such as various types of signal heads, luminaire arms, lighted street name signs, school flasher poles and beacons, pedestrian indication poles and bases, installation of traffic signal pull boxes etc.
Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs traffic signal related electrical and electronic components operating at various different voltages and amperages in both Direct as well as Alternating currents.
Performs preventive maintenance daily on traffic signals and traffic signal systems.
Responds to emergency calls relative to traffic signal malfunctions during regular working hours and subject to being on call after normal work hours and on weekends.
Operates various types of equipment required for the installation of traffic control devices.
Investigates complaints pertaining to traffic signal malfunctions and assesses situation, troubleshoots and takes appropriate corrective actions.
Operates service truck to carry materials, equipment and personnel to job sites.
Maintains, repairs and installs vehicular detection components and equipment.
Maintains records on equipment malfunctions, and equipment inventory.
Performs duties in a safe and orderly manner, complying with all City and department safety rules.
Regular attendance at work and arrives on time.
Performs all other job-related duties as assigned or as become apparent.
Ability to get along with other employees and the public.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Ability to transport self from site to site.
Ability to drive various types of vehicles to and from worksites.
Employee will work in extreme seasonal temperatures and from moderate heights, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, twisting, climbing and lifting in order to maintain or repair the City’s traffic control network.
Ability to climb ladders and must operate and work in a bucket truck on day to day basis sometimes in excess of 60 feet off the ground and often for extended periods of time.
Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds during construction of new signals or while performing repairs.
Must be able to pull wire, trench and bury electrical conduits and cables.
Employee must have visual acuity and fine motor skills to identify and handle small electrical components.
Employee will be exposed to dust, loud noises, fumes, odors and vibrations.
Employee will be exposed to potential electrical, mechanical, chemical and traffic hazards while engaged in construction and repair of electronics and electrical wiring.
Employee must be able to walk on slippery, loose, uneven and sloped surfaces.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools and equipment of the electrical trade.
Considerable knowledge of the principles of electrical and electronic theory as related to work assignments.
Considerable knowledge of traffic control equipment.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards of and safety precautions involved in electrical work.
Considerable knowledge of the principles and operation of traffic signal systems.
Ability to read, interpret and identify differences between various types of cabling and conductors, typical wiring diagrams, schematics, equipment and policy manuals and work orders.
Skill in the use and care of the tools, equipment and materials employed, such as Digital multi-meters, miscellaneous electrician hand tools, soldering Irons, portable hand drills, hammer drills.
Ability to write legible reports and to follow oral and written instructions.
Computer skills are a definite plus.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification: High school diploma or equivalent.
Two years of experience in electronic or electrical OR, an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid Texas Class B Commercial driver’s license with air brakes endorsement required within six months of employment.
Driving record that meets City guidelines.
